Laboratory Technician at SciLifeLab
The Department of Environmental Science is one of the larger departments within the Faculty of Science.
The department consists of four units with over 170 employees including researchers, teachers, PhD students, and technical/administrative staff from more than 30 different countries. Research and teaching are conducted in environmental chemistry, ecotoxicology, atmospheric science, and biogeochemistry. As an employee at the Department of Environmental Science, you will be part of a dynamic environment with world-class research and a strong international character. More information about us can be found at: https://www.su.se/institutionen-for-miljovetenskap/ (https://www.su.se/institutionen-for-miljovetenskap/).
SciLifeLab hosts national research infrastructures and is tasked with providing groundbreaking and enabling molecular technologies to the Swedish research community. The national infrastructure for exposomics is the first SciLifeLab unit, https://www.scilifelab.se/units/exposomics/ (https://www.scilifelab.se/units/exposomics/), operated by ACES, offering national research services for extensive analysis of chemical contaminants and small molecules in human and environmental samples using targeted and non-targeted mass spectrometry, also known as chemical exposomics.
Job Responsibilities
We are looking for a motivated and meticulous laboratory technician who wants to join the team at the national infrastructure for exposomics, SciLifeLab, Campus Solna. The applicant should have experience working in an analytical or environmental chemistry laboratory, be familiar with safe handling of chemicals and human biofluids, and have experience with sample preparation techniques and quality control for trace chemical analysis. You will contribute to the organization of the laboratory, maintenance of equipment, sample processing according to standard operating procedures (SOP), and have daily contact with the unit manager and laboratory manager. You will also actively participate in the development of new analytical techniques and their application in user projects. The applicant should be able to communicate and collaborate with a multidisciplinary research team in a dynamic laboratory environment.
Specific job responsibilities include:
- Receiving, cataloging, and storing human or environmental samples from research users.
- Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of laboratory procedures.
- Managing inventory of laboratory materials and reagents and assisting with the procurement of supplies.
- Performing sample preparation and extraction according to standard operating procedures (SOPs) for chemical exposomics.
- Contributing to regular inventory of equipment and chemical standards.
- Participating in the operation of the laboratory and the development of new methodologies and techniques.
- Preparing quantitative solutions of analytical standards and their mixtures.
- Operating high-resolution mass spectrometry instruments (LC and GC Orbitrap).
- Performing routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and monitoring mass spectrometry instruments.
- Communicating effectively with supervisors and team members.
Qualifications
Technician positions are primarily filled to support research. Applicants are expected to have a degree in analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, or equivalent. Applicants should have good knowledge and experience in analytical chemistry, sample preparation, LC-based separations, and mass spectrometry. A PhD is advantageous, as is previous experience with mass spectrometry, including high-resolution mass spectrometry. Additional experience in preprocessing raw data and non-targeted analysis applied to environmental research, metabolomics, or exposomics is also highly meritorious. Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities, such as a positive and professional attitude and the ability to collaborate with users and staff. Applicants should have good knowledge of English, both spoken and written, and be able to communicate in a professional, objective, and transparent manner. Other meritorious qualifications include:
- Experience with analytical and environmental chemistry laboratory protocols.
- Experience working in scientific research groups.
- Good organizational skills, ability to collaborate, and independent judgment.
- Experience with targeted and non-targeted methods applied to human exposure, environmental analysis, metabolomics, and/or exposomics.
- Experience in sample processing and extraction, and preferably previous experience with automated liquid handling systems.
- Practical experience with liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) and understanding of data-dependent and data-independent acquisition (DDA, DIA).
- Preferably experience with FAIR workflows and use of open-source software and cheminformatics resources for mass spectrometry data management and data deposition.
- Knowledge of data analysis with open programming languages (e.g., R and Python) is an advantage.
